Formatting a radio button matrix in a questionnaire

Updated on May 11, 2022

Format a radio button matrix in a survey to ask a series of related questions that users answer by selecting one option from a repeating group of radio buttons. In a radio button matrix, in each row, users can select an answer from only one column. For example, you can ask users to rate their pain threshold on a scale of one to five for different activities, such as swimming, running, or walking.

Before you begin: Add a question of the radio button matrix type to your questionnaire. For more information, see Adding a question to a question page.
Note: Only standard Pega Platform applications support questions with a radio button matrix. Applications based on Cosmos React do not display questions with a radio button matrix.
  1. Navigate to the questionnaire:
    ChoicesActions
Open the questionnaire in App Studio
    1. In the navigation pane of App Studio, click Case types, and then click the case type that you want to open.
    2. In the list of case types, open a case type of the Questionnaire type that you want to edit.
Open the questionnaire in Dev Studio
    1. In the header of Dev Studio, click ConfigureCase ManagementSurvey.
    2. Click the questionnaire that you want to edit.
  2. If you have multiple questions in the question page, click the question that you want to edit.
  3. In the list of question types, select Radio button matrix.
  4. In the rich text editor, enter your question.
For example: Enter Rate your pain threshold during different activities.
  5. In the Columns section, create columns for the matrix:
    1. Click Add column.
    2. In the text field, enter a label for the column.
For example: Enter phrases to describe different levels of pain, such as No pain or Moderate pain.
    3. Optional: To add more columns, repeat steps 5.a through 5.b.
  6. In the Rows section, create rows for the matrix:
    1. Click Add row.
    2. In the text field, enter a label for the row.
For example: Enter different activities, such as Swimming or Running.
  7. Optional: To store the selected value from a column under a name that is different from the label, change the reporting value:
    1. Click MoreAdvanced view.
    2. In the Reporting value field, replace the default value with your custom value.
For example: You can label the columns with adjectives describing different levels of pain, and then store the results as numbers.
  8. Optional: To display a row only in selected scenarios, configure visibility conditions:
    1. Click MoreAdvanced view.
    2. From the Visible when list, select When, and then click Edit.
    3. Provide a value to compare at run time, a comparator, and a value to compare against the first value.
For example: To display Swimming only to users who declare performing this activity, create the condition Activity is in list "Swimming", "Running", "Walking".
    4. Optional: To add more conditions, click Add a row.
    5. If you create multiple rows, define whether an answer needs to meet all or any conditions by selecting either and or or between the rows.
    6. Click Submit.
  9. Click Save.
For example: The following figure shows a radio button matrix to rate pain threshold during different activities:

What to do next: Provide tools to compare and calculate weight of responses by scoring answers in the radio button matrix. For more information, see Scoring answers in a questionnaire.
