Segments and Samples in Revision Management

Updated on July 5, 2022

Audience type rules such as Segments and Samples are handled differently in Revision Management, in order to preserve data integrity between their definition and the stored results.

The Rules for Segments and Samples that are included in the overlay are listed under Rules on the Segmentation tab of the Revision Management landing page. This landing page can be accessed by clicking the Revision Management link in Pega Customer Decision Hub.

Note: Starting in Pega Customer Decision Hub version 8.5, configuring a Sample functionality is considered deprecated and may be removed in future versions of the product.

Unlike other rule types, you must check out Segment and Sample rules before you can update them. After you update a rule, u must check it back in.

Segment and Sample rules can be managed in the following two ways:

  • By including them in an existing Revision
  • By packaging them directly

Including the rules in an existing Revision

If there is an active Revision, updated Segments and Samples are automatically associated with the Revision. The Revision object displays the list of included Segments and Samples, along with their current status. An In progress status indicates that the rule is currently checked out, while Updated indicates that the rule is checked in.

No special action is required to package these rules because they are included in the revision package, which is generated upon completion of the Revision.

Packaging the rules directly

Even when there isn't an active Revision, users can open and modify Segments and Samples. In such cases, after you check in all modified rules, revision managers can click Package rules... on the Segmentation tab of the Revision Management landing page to package the rules directly.

By clicking Package rules... you automatically generate a Revision, complete it, and make the revision package available.

Importing Revision Packages

You can import basic revision packages following the prescribed Revision Management process. However, revision packages that contain any of the following rule types require additional configuration during import to prevent compromising the live data:

  • Output Templates
  • Segments
  • Samples
  • Volume Constraints

For these packages, you must skip the optional test phase of the import process by selecting the Skip test phase checkbox in the Review contents stage.

After the import is complete, the following actions are recommended for such packages:

  • Run imported Segments and Samples to apply the latest definitions.
  • Review imported Volume Constraints and determine if any of the manually reset constraints should be reset.
Note: For marketing rules that support scheduling (for example Segments, Samples or Output Templates), the import process retains the schedule configuration (if configured) on the destination environment.
