Summary

A redirected rule is a circumstance-qualified rule that is configured to reference another circumstance-qualified rule (for the same base rule). This feature allows one rule to "forward" to another.

Redirection is available for three rule type:

• Decision trees
• Decision tables
• Map values (Rule-Obj-MapValue)

NOTE:  Beginning in Version 5.4, multivariate circumstance functionality is available (see How Multivariate Circumstancing Works).  For Version 5.4 and later releases, you can use multivariate circumstancing rather than redirection.

Suggested Approach

To create a redirected rule:

1. Create the base (uncircumstanced) version of the decision tree, decision table, or map value rule.

2.  Create a circumstanced version of this base rule.  (This will be the “main” circumstanced rule.)  See How to Create a Rule with a Single Circumstanced Property.

Note that on this first circumstanced rule, the Redirect this Rule choice is not present in the Options list (on the Results tab).  This is because there is no other circumstanced rule this rule could be redirected to.

3.  Create another rule with a different circumstance value for that property.  On this version of the rule, note that the Redirect this Rule check box is now present (on the Results tab, under Options.)

4.  Check the box. 

5.  The form fields will now change.  Most of the fields will now be grayed out, and a Circumstance Value field will display.  Choose the appropriate circumstance value for the circumstanced rule you wish to redirect to (created in Step 2).

6.  Click Save.

7.  The Decision tab of this rule now points to the chosen circumstanced rule.  (Note that the information on this tab of the redirected rule also appears grayed out.)
