Internet Explorer 7 Timeouts in Process Commander

Updated on September 12, 2008

Symptom

When you access Process Commander with Intenet Explorer V6, the AJAX facilities use a custom server request timeout.

Functionality differs between IE 6 and IE 7; when accessing Process Commander from Internet Explorer v7, a number of facilities use the IE server request timeout, including:

  • SmartPrompt
  • the Find functionality on the Developer portal
  • the Work Close functionality on both the User and Developer portals

and the browser appears to hang with no server response for a longer time.

Solution

The Process Commander server request timeout is generally 20 to 40 seconds, and generates a “Server Busy” or other facility-specific message when the timeout period expires, so the user has the choice of trying again.

The IE 7 timeout is 2 to 5 minutes, which is long enough that the user may decide that the system has hung, and will close and restart the browser session instead of being able to retry the request.
