Control Groups (deprecated)

Updated on September 15, 2022

In an experiment, a Control Group is a group, separated from the rest of the experiment, which is isolated from the variable being tested. In customer engagement, Control Groups can be used to assess the performance of customer engagement initiatives.

Pega Customer Decision Hub
Note: Starting in Pega Customer Decision Hub version 8.7, this functionality is considered deprecated and may be removed in future versions of the product.

Pega Customer Decision Hub provides support for defining and populating Control Groups. In addition, the Strategy rule also provides support for assessing whether a customer is in a Control Group. This allows the user to treat Control Group members differently. For example, Control Groups members might not receive a particular action.

Pega Customer Decision Hub uses Interaction History (IH) to maintain Control Group memberships. This allows Control Groups to be used in both batch and real-time strategies.

When the IH is stored in an external file system instead of the database, the Control Group functionality is not available. Starting in version 8.7, for all new deployments of Pega Customer Decision Hub the IH will be stored externally by default.

Note: If you are upgrading your Pega Customer Decision Hub, you can opt in to the configuration with externally stored IH by Enable the export of interactions and decisions to a repository.

There is an alternative way of configuring Control Groups using Next-Best-Action Designer. For more information, see NBA Strategy framework components: Action scoring through to control group handling.
