Installing the OCR Screen Scraping and Document OCR features

Updated on October 19, 2022

Pega Robotic Automation v22.1 includes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Screen Scraping and Document OCR features. These features use the OCR capabilities in the third-party tool, the ABBYY FineReader Engine.

With the OCR Screen Scraping feature you can collect the data that appears on the screen and then manipulate that data in automations. The OCR Screen Scraping feature supports running on a virtual machine that is in the Amazon or Azure Cloud environment. For more information, see Creating automations using the Screen OCR feature.

With the Document OCR feature you can convert scanned documents into a PDF files that can then be used by the PDF component in an automation. For more information, see Incorporating PDF files into an automation.

Note: The ABBYY FineReader Engine, which Pegasystems has licensed, is included in your Pega Robotic Automation software. Verify that you are licensed to use the ABBYY FineReader Engine within the scope of your Pega Robotic Automation license. If you have any questions about the terms of your license, contact Pegasystems customer support.

To use the OCR features, install the PegaRobotOCREssentials module after you install Pega Robotic Automation. This module is included in your installation files.

  1. Open the Pega Robotic Automation update that you downloaded from Pega.
  2. Extract the file.
  3. Double-click the PegaRobotOCREssentialsSetup.exe file.
  4. Follow the prompts that the Setup wizard displays to complete the installation.
Result: By default, the wizard installs the OCR-related files into the following folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Pegasystems\Pega Robot OCR Essentials\.
