Portal rules - Completing the Tabs tab

Updated on March 28, 2008

This presentation is part of the Portals Overview Self-Study Course.

Transcript

The Tabs section allows the user to define which bars appear in the navigation panel of the portal, the labels of those bars, which gadgets appear in the sections defined by the bars, and how those gadgets are labeled.  Each tab defined has both a narrow column and a wide column.  The gadgets listed in the Narrow column are displayed in the navigation pane of the portal when that tab is clicked.  The gadgets listed in the wide column are displayed in the work space portion of the screen.

The Title of the tab corresponds to both the title of the tab in the left navigation panel, and the title of the browser session when that tab is clicked.  Often, clients prefer to see the HTML title display the name of their applications.  If this is the case, you can pre-pend application titles to the name.  For example, if the application is called Global Case Management or GCM, you can enter "GCM – Process Work" in the Title field and this value will be displayed in the browser title.
In both the Narrow and Wide Columns there is a pair of common fields:  Gadget Image and the checkbox labeled "Custom".   The Gadget Image field is optional and allows you to identify the name of a GIF file that is used to identify this gadget in the portal.  The checkbox labeled "Custom" is used to indicate that an activity defined in the "Custom" tab will be used to create the gadget rather than an HTML rule name.

In the Wide Column, the checkbox labeled "Refresh on Application Change" is used to cause the system to refresh the contents of the workspace area when it becomes visible or the user uses the application selector in the navigation panel to choose a new work pool or application.

The checkbox labeled "Expanded?" is selected to cause the display of this gadget to appear in expanded form when the workspace is first presented.  If the checkbox labeled "Deferred?" is selected, it causes the HTML code for this gadget to be generated and sent to the users Explorer session only when the gadget is explicitly opened by a click.  This field is only modifiable when the field labeled "Expanded?" is not checked.
