Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition is a comprehensive set of Java-based tools, standards, components, and technologies for large-scale distributed computing offered by Sun Microsystems Inc.

JavaServer Pages (JSP), Java Messaging Service (JMS), Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) and Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) are among the parts of J2EE.

Using the prweb.ear file, V5.2 and later can be deployed into the Enterprise tier of IBM WebSphere or Oracle WebLogic application servers, which support many J2EE standards. The Service JMS rules, Service EJB rules, and a few other Process Commander J2EE features are functional in these environments. These approach is known as an Enterprise deployment, or equivalently an ETier deployment, or Enterprise Application.

Using the prweb.war file, V5.2+ can be deployed in the Web tier of Apache Tomcat and other application servers. J2EE-specific features are not available in the WAR file approach.

In June 2005, Sun Microsystems rebranded J2EE as Java EE, or Java Enterprise Edition 2.

Don't confuse Enterprise Application — a deployment option — with the unrelated Enterprise Application wizard, a tool to build starter applications.
