SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a protocol that is used for the exchange of information in a decentralized, distributed environment. SOAP is an XML-based protocol with three components:

• An envelope for describing what is in a message and how to process it
• Encoding rules for expressing instances of application-defined data types
• A convention for remote procedure calls and responses

Services implemented using SOAP are often called Web services. The SOAP standard is maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at www.w3c.org.
