About the Referencing Rules display

For most rule types, Process Commander maintains a real-time system-wide list of selected other rules that reference the current rule. This information can be helpful in understanding the context and purpose of a rule. C-2622

When interpreting this display, note these limitations:

• In this context, "rule A references rule B", means that one or more key parts of rule B appear in the rule form for rule A. Your system may include many such "B" rules. At runtime, rule resolution determines which of possibly many "B" rules the system accesses and runs.
• All the references shown are valid, but some references to the current rule may not appear.
• The display can include rules that belong to RuleSets or versions you cannot execute.
• For performance reasons, the Referencing Rules display of a rule with @baseclass as the Applies To or Class Name key part may be incomplete. All the references shown are valid, but some references (on Process Commander systems with a very large number of rules) may not appear. B-3758
• For certain rule types, the display is always empty. See Limitations.

Accessing the Referencing Rules display

Use either of the following options to open the Referencing Rules display:C-571 C-846 B-19648 removed button

• If the rule form is open and visible, click the Related Rules toolbar tool () and select Referencing Rules from the pop-up menu.
• From the Application Explorer, right-click a single rule. Select Related Rules > Referencing Rules from the menu that appears. C-2444

Interacting with the Referencing Rules display

Limitations

Information presented in the left panel depends on indexes. The system updates these indexes only as you save another rule that references this rule. BUG-1165 B-21090 BUG-2997

Rules of some types are not referenced explicitly by any other rules. These include:

• Skill rules
• Service rules (Rule-Service- rule type)
• Declare Trigger rules
• Declare OnChange rules
• Declare Constraint rules
• Declare Trigger rules

The left panel is empty for such rule types.

References to rules within handcrafted Java — in a Java step of an activity, or in an edit input rule, for example   — do not appear in either the left or right column.

References to properties, stream rules, and other rules inside directives do not appear in either the left or right column. (References in JSP tags do appear.)

References to properties through the global resource settings mechanism do not appear in this display.

Notes

The system saves rule referencing details information as instances of the Index-Reference class, corresponding to rows of the pr_index_reference table.

When you save a rule, the standard Declare Index rule named Rule-RuleReference updates this table to reflect the references in that rule to other rules.

This display is informally known as a bow tie diagram.

If your Process Commander system is upgraded from a release before V5.3, you can run an optional function to improve this display for rules in your application RuleSets: CODE-310

1. Select> System > Tools > Validate > Revalidate for References. BYRNB 2/25/10
2. Enter a RuleSet name and identify the versions to be affected.
3. Click  Revalidate for References. Processing may require several minutes to complete.
4. Repeat for other RuleSets.
