You are here: Reference > Rule types > About Portal rules
Use portal rules to create a custom portal layout for a group of users. You can determine:
- The portal role — User (portals whose users do not update rules) or Developer (portals whose users do update rules).
- The portal type — Custom, composite.
- For composite portals, the harnesses that define each space.
- CSS styles for the portal window, reports, and user forms.
- For traditional portals, the gadgets, workspaces and workspace labels.
Contrasting composite, fixed (traditional), and Mobile user portals
- Composite portals are defined by harnesses and sections. Composite portals can operate with Internet Explorer 6 and later , Firefox 3.5 and later, Safari 4 and later, and Chrome 5 and later browsers. As a best practice, use composite portals for new development. The parts of a composite portal are defined on the Spaces tab.
Two samples of composite portals are provided: User and Manager.
See How to create a composite portal.
- Fixed or traditional portals, such as the standard WorkUser and WorkManager portals, operate only with Internet Explorer. Traditional user portals are built from gadgets—special HTML rules—rather than harnesses and sections. Gadgets are referenced on the Options, Tabs, and Custom tabs. Through activities and HTML rules, you can create additional gadgets for traditional portals and determine their appearance and behavior. See How to customize traditional user portal layout and behavior.
