Troubleshooting Show User Location feature in browsers

Updated on November 15, 2021
Applicable to Theme UI-Kit applications

The ability to show the user location is part of the Address Map control functionality - see Using an Address Map control. It uses the Geolocation feature in a browser. Depending on whether Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari is used, this feature may be restricted or configured incorrectly.

Follow the steps listed below for different browsers to ensure that the Geolocation information is available to the Address Map control properly.

Internet Explorer

The Geolocation features are supported in Internet Explorer versions 9 and above. Your browser’s privacy settings may be set up, by default, in a way that prevents access to your location. To check whether this holds true follow these instructions:

  1. From the Internet Options window click the Privacy tab.
  2. Ensure that the Never allow websites to request your physical location check box is not selected.
Note: A known issue related to the Geolocation API exists - it does not work correctly for some Internet Explorer instances, even after the privacy options outlined above have been adjusted. A browser version upgrade may also not fix this issue. There is no known workaround other than using a different browser altogether.

Chrome

Refer to the Location Sharing link to learn how to configure location services in Chrome. You will have to make sure the Allow all sites to track your physical location option is selected.

Firefox

Refer to the Location-Aware Browsing link to learn how to configure location services in Firefox. You will have to make sure the geo.enabled preference is enabled.

Safari

Refer to the About Location Services in Mac OS X and Safari link to learn how to configure the location services in Safari.
